PHOENIX for solo violin (2007) - 7 min.
Dedicated to Andrzej Grabiec
This composition is a musical image of the unique bird that lived for five or six centuries in the Arabian desert, after this time burning itself on a funeral pyre and rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle.
Such allusions as there are to the Phoenix myth are represented musically through various means including the juxtaposition of chromatic gestures with those that are primarily pandiatonic. The syncopated rhythmic influence is drawn from contemporary American musics including jazz and country fiddling.
