RIVER OF CRYSTAL LIGHT for clarinet, harp, piano and strings (1999) - 10 min.

Dedicated to David Campbell

River of Crystal Light is a brief concerto for virtuoso Bb clarinet, strings, harp, and piano. This work was premiered by the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra with Marcelo Bussiki conducting on October 10, 1999.

The clarinet writing in River of Crystal Light exploits the entire range of the instrument (with much of the music lying in the clarino register) which facilitates an array of different musical moods; impish, spiky, dreamy and dramatic. This composition is a musical reflection of natural phenomena, generally the abundance of spectacle and beauty of our natural world and, more specifically, the visual and auditory intricacies of rivers: violent rapids, tranquil pools, water falls, rivulets, and such.

Recorded by David Campbell and the Moores School Symphony Orchestra conducted by Franz Anton Krager on the CD LIVING WATERS - Albany Records TROY 928
